► The Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO)
held a ceremony at the Portsmouth Gaseous
Diffusion Plant on July 27, 2007 to recognize
completion of a major cleanup action with the
removal of more than 49,000 containers of
hazardous and mixed waste from the X-7725
building and the availability for turnover of
the facility from DOE
to USEC Inc. for industrial reuse
by the
commercial centrifuge program.
The cleanup action reduced more than 20,000 tons
of waste generated from the nearly 50 years of
uranium enrichment operations formerly at the
plant and from cleanup activities conducted
since the early 1990s. The volume of waste
removed from the building would cover a football
field nearly 14 feet deep. (Click

LATA/Parallax, DOE's environmental remediation
contractor, removed the last containers from the
building on May 31, 2007 to free up the more
than 265,000 square feet of storage space.
This achievement meets DOE's commitment to make
the facility available to USEC Inc. on July 31
for reuse by a commercial centrifuge program
that will begin full operations in 2012.
► The U.S. Department of Energy held a public
meeting on Tuesday, June 27, 2006 to discuss the
Environmental Management Program at the
Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Project
updates were provided to the
approximately
60 attendees: the DUF6 conversion plant progress
by John McCoy, Uranium Disposition Services; the
environmental cleanup by LATA/Parallax Project
Manager Paul Kreitz; Cold Shutdown of the
gaseous diffusion plant by USEC's General
Manager Wray Jordan; and planning for
decontamination and decommissioning of the GDP
by DOE's Jud Lilly. Bill Murphie, Manager of the
DOE's Portsmouth Paducah Project Office, kicked
off the meeting and fielded questions following
the presentation.
