This 100 square foot structure was built in 1981 for use as general and soil sample storage and later as an air monitoring station. It was relocated by truck on February 22, 2006 to an on-site area where it was size reduced, placed into waste containers, and shipped for disposal at an authorized off-site disposal facility.
This 100 square foot facility served as an Environmental Monitoring Station on the east side of the plant until 1983. Along with the other facilities pictured here, a concurrence was obtained from the Ohio Historic Preservation Office that no historic properties were affected by the demolitions.
The largest of the three initial structures was demolished on February 28, 2006, with shipment of all waste debris to off-site disposal facilities being completed by the end of March 2006. It was constructed in 1982 as a 6,000 square foot facility to serve as a staging area for 55-gallon drums of waste solvents and oils pending final disposition. The facility underwent full closure under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act in the mid-1990s with closure accepted by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency in 1998.
Built in 1967, this 2,400 square foot facility served for 20 years as a center for fire training exercises, pumper testing, and occasional storage by various departments at the Portsmouth site. No known hazardous materials or wastes resulting from use by the fire department were stored, generated, treated, or disposed at the facility. It was demolished on March 16, 2006.
This facility underwent the first phases of demolition on April 4, 2006, becoming the last of the five initial inactive support facilities to be taken down under the work scope of LATA/Parallax Portsmouth, LLC. The demolition comes 13 years after the facility was last used to treat recirculating cooling water blowdown from the process cooling water system containing a chromium-based corrosion inhibitor. The removal of chromium-contaminated sludges and soils from the X-616 Surface Impoundments was completed on June 21, 1992. The X-616 facility was approximately 2,500 square feet and included five above-grade tanks, three below-grade tanks and a small pump house. Shipment of waste debris to an off-site landfill was completed by April 27, 2006.
Twenty-four years after it was last used to treat sanitary sewage, the first phases of this facility's demolition began on April 25, 2006. The Old Sewage Treatment Plant was constructed in the 1954-1955 time frame and encompassed 6,300 square feet. The facility treated the plant sewage using an anaerobic digester process with clarifiers, filters, and sludge drying beds and operated until 1982, when it was deactivated following construction of a new sewage treatment plant. The removal of demolition material was handled by CDM, a teaming partner of LATA/Parallax Portsmouth, LLC at the plant site.
This ventilation stack was constructed in 1958 to serve as a support system in the former gaseous diffusion operations. In operation until the mid-1980s, it was approximately 30 feet high, four feet in diameter, and contained within a metal support structure. In the event of an emergency, it was used to vent designated liquid and vapor lines. Facility demolition took place on May 23, 2006.
This 100 square foot concrete block building was in operation from 1958 until the mid-1980s. The structure was located adjacent to the X-344C Hydrogen Fluoride Storage Building and the X-344E Gas Ventilation Stack (both demolished in May 2006). It contained an emergency shower and was intended for emergency use in the event of personnel coming into contact with Hydrogen Fluoride. Facility demolition took place on May 31, 2006 and debris was disposed of at an off-site licensed facility.
This facility was constructed in 1958 as a support facility for the diffusion plant. It covered approximately 1,700 square feet and housed three 10,000-gallon storage tanks with a capacity of 70,000 to 80,000 pounds of hydrogen fluoride. Each tank was equipped with a rupture disc system for protection against overpressurization and a vent system for purging in preparation for maintenance. Use of the X-344C tank farm was discontinued in 1986. Demolition of the facility occurred on May 31, 2006.
This area was an exterior, open-top, concrete pit measuring 107.5 feet long and five feet deep. This equated to a total volume of approximately 75,000 gallons. In use from 1955 until 1989, its purpose was to neutralize waste hydrogen fluoride solutions (hydrofluoric acid) from the X-344 complex of buildings. The facility was removed between June 26 and July 13, 2006.
This facility was constructed in 1955 to prepare deionized water for decontamination and chemical cleaning operations in the X-700 Chemical Cleaning Building. The building was used for this purpose until 1985 and was demolished on July 21, 2006.
This structure was built in 1954 and served as a filling station for gas cylinders used throughout the site and to store compressed gas cylinders. Demolition of the facility began on August 2, 2006 and was completed nine days later. Offsite shipment of the debris and refill of the area was completed on August 17, 2006.
This structure was an 11,000 square foot facility built in 1957, initially as a temporary facility for use as a construction field office where process pipe was fabricated during construction of the gaseous diffusion plant. The building was later used as an instrument development building, engineering office area, and for electronic maintenance of equipment. Demolition of the building was completed October 5, 2006, with subsequent shipment of the building debris to an off-site licensed facility also being completed.
This facility is approximately 22,640 square feet and was constructed in 1954. In operation until 1974, the X-770 had three test loops used to test modified equipment before installation into the process buildings. Some of the equipment was removed in the mid-1980s. The facility operated separately from the uranium enrichment process since the purpose was only to test equipment, not enrich uranium.
