PROJECT UPDATE :

Legacy Waste Disposition

Removal of legacy waste from the Portsmouth site was completed the end of Fiscal Year (FY) 2007. In order to accomplish this, LATA/Parallax Portsmouth, LLC (LPP) took the following actions:

A container is loaded into an awaiting truck. Accelerated the waste shipment schedule, while still maintaining strict adherence to all safety and security measures. More than 10,000 containers of waste were shipped off-site for disposal after the contract was awarded by the Department of Energy to LATA/Parallax in 2005.

► Awarded a $9.4 million contract in February 2006 for the treatment of 1,063 containers of the most challenging waste streams to meet Land Disposal Restrictions. (News Release)

► Utilized Real Time Radiography (RTR) technology to evaluate contents of mixed and low-level waste containers. This process not only saved time but also provided a significant safety benefit to workers. (News Release)

Each of these implementations was significant in completing the legacy waste disposition project ahead of schedule. For the first time in 15 years, waste is now being removed from the site as it is generated. (Photos)
